A4 Week 10 Session 1

For class we had to answer personal reflective questions to prompt ideas on our own reflection in our final assignment, and a basic introduction to ourselves. Here’s how it turned out!

Assignment 1 question:

How did you decide on which parts of the existing footage you would use to shape your project?

In forming my creative ideas for the project, I broke it up into three different approaches. I initially watched the entirety of the original footage for each of the options presented and thought about the overall imagery being communicated in each one. I then went into a second phase, where I would skim through the footage to key moments, and begin to think about the overall narrative that was originally present. Then I ultimately settled on the final choice, and broke down the individual components that I felt were most compelling and began experimentation in the software.

Assignment 2 question:

How did you translate your thumbnail sketches into the final flat designs in Illustrator? Was anything lost in that translation, or gained?

The development of my thumbnail sketches started off from drawing direct inspiration from my research in Aboriginals and Bloodborne. I put the pen to paper, and then sought peer reviewed feedback in the transition to illustrator, getting individuals to mark the work they found most interesting so that way I could be certain on the direction free from my own bias’. In the development of the sketches in illustrator, I was able to reflect on my own drawings that were scrapped, and began to incorporate elements that originally weren’t there. Not only this, but as the icons took shape digitally, there were ideas and themes between the icons that naturally began to interweave as I put them up side by side. There was a lot of rapid iteration in terms of the development of the icons, where, as the icons were being made, spontaneous ideas that could connect them were also implemented in a trial-and-error process.

Assignment 3 question:

How did your experience of designing and producing a three-dimensional environment differ from your experience of designing and producing a project in two-dimensional media?

In developing a project in 3D, it got me thinking about environmental design and space. Rather than having my head focus on iconography in books and webpages, I was looking at general architecture and space. This was especially so in some of the video games I would play in my free time, where I was paying attention to key landmarks in the environment, and how, in some games in particular, the environment was being used to tell a story. Thinking about utilising space as a medium for experience was an interesting experience, as, traditionally, I’ve focused on the physical interaction or the readability at initial glance. I had a lot of fun getting to learn about environmental design and exploring the ways to communicate narrative through a 3D form instead of 2D.

Biography:

My name is Light, I’m 22, a Design enthusiast, and have an extreme passion for reflective thinking. I like delving deep into critical analysis, and learning about different perspectives from the people around me. I have done previous studies in both Industrial and Communication design, with an interest in specializing in UX design at RMIT. In my free time I go exploring the city and trying out new foods, spending time with friends, and playing tabletop/video games. I live for new experiences, and love meeting new people!

In having completed this task, it allowed me to begin thinking how to develop my website. I know I want to communicate utilising multiple webpages for the most intuitive experience. I would like to present my work to potential employers, and help future proof my university studies by having a website that I could begin using near immediately. The features would primarily focus around the navbar experience, where a user can click on an icon to move around the various webpages. The approach would be an aesthetically pleasing website, that could effectively communicate my own personal sleek style, while also having a contemporary modern look, as I feel that best expresses my own personality into the website. I want the user to engage with what feels like a modern, experienced designer, as my background comes from various design disciplines, and having a strong initial impression upon entering the website would be the main goal to engage the viewers into discovering more.
