A2 Week 4 Session 1

The black square activity was an excellent way to prompt my design thinking skills. Having come from a background of Design study over the past couple of years, I have some of my own personal ways of approaching the creative process. While I found the black square activity restraining, it was also pushing me creatively to come up with solutions in ways I hadn’t thought of before. Reflecting upon this activity made me actively aware of how I find putting some restraints on myself when coming up with ideas lets me develop some of my strongest designs. It was through this activity that prompted some of my initial iterations on the task, ultimately leading to me to lock in the “dream” direction. My mind wandered to a couple of key things, one being the video game “Bloodborne”, and the other being Aboriginal culture. Thinking about these two things, I began my investigation by looking at various images that relate to nightmares and the Aboriginals, looking at things like the dreamtime and developing concepts themed around Australia. Having identified some of the basic imagery around Bloodborne, such as straight linear lines, and the smooth circular shapes in Aboriginal culture, I jumped straight into illustrator to develop some basic ideas that I could further explore in a future task.
